Antique Grand Tour Bronze Statue of Diana the Huntress – Signed A. Nelli, Roma – Black Marble Base
A fine antique Grand Tour bronze of Diana, goddess of the hunt, signed on the base “A. NELLI ROMA.” The goddess stands in a graceful, dynamic pose, one hand reaching back to the quiver on her shoulder, the other holding her bow, while a leaping deer bounds at her side. The finely modeled drapery, the sandaled feet and the crisp details of the face and hair are beautifully rendered under a deep, richly nuanced brown patina. The bronze remains on a round black marble base.
Late 19th century, Rome.
About the subject
This composition is based on one of the most celebrated statues of antiquity, the marble “Artemis with a Doe,” known as the “Diana of Versailles.” It is a Roman copy of a lost Greek bronze traditionally attributed to the sculptor Leochares (4th century BC). The marble was given by Pope Paul IV to King Henri II of France in 1556, later stood at Versailles, and is now in the Louvre. Reduced bronze versions like this one were prized by travelers on the Grand Tour as souvenirs of the great antique masterpieces.
About the foundry
The stamp “A. NELLI ROMA” is the mark of the Fonderia Nelli in Rome, founded by Alessandro Nelli (1842–1897). It was the first sculpture foundry in Rome from about 1880 to 1900, specializing in bronze reductions of antique and Renaissance masterpieces. Nelli exhibited at national and international fairs, won prizes and medals, and sent more than one hundred pieces to the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
