Antique Oval Portrait of a Gentleman – Oil on Canvas – Early 19th Century
A fine antique oval portrait of a gentleman, painted in oil on canvas. The sitter is shown bust-length and turned slightly toward the viewer, with dark hair, full sideburns and a calm, direct gaze. He wears a high white cravat tied in a bow over a pleated shirt front, a buff-yellow waistcoat and a dark coat, a fashion typical of the 1820s to 1840s, the Restoration and July Monarchy period in France. The face is softly modeled against a warm, muted olive-brown background, and the sitter’s identity is unknown. An intimate, characterful portrait, with the oval format popular in that period.
